Making pizza has been Joe Ferruggio’s mission from when he came over as an immigrant from the beautiful island of Sicilia to the bustling city of Washington, D.C. in 1970. But it wasn’t enough for Joe to just make pizza for Washingtonians, it had to be the best pizza in the world! Always perfecting and getting the best ingredients like organic flour; buffalo mozzarella, etc., over 50 years later Joe has perfected the Neapolitan Style pizza that he serves in several of his DC Metro based restaurants including Il Canale in Georgetown and is now bringing his pizza with a generous smile to those in need. Tuesday, May 21st Il Canale will generously donate the first batch of 2,000 pizzas for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. event, Pizza for a Smile to serve those in need.
This will kick off a months-long initiative of freshly made pizzas from a local restaurant to individuals served by the agency’s social services. In this first distribution, 125 individual margherita pizzas donated by the Il Canale through The People of Hope will be given out to those attending Catholic Charities’ St. Maria’s Meals service along G Street NW. Through October, a total of 1,000 pizzas will be given out to participants in Catholic Charities’ social service programs.
“I’ve been really, really, lucky to make it to this place in life…and when someone asked me to give back I was thrilled to do it, to bring a smile to our kids...so we’re going to give away 2,000 pizzas.” - Joe Ferruggio, Owner, Il Canale
