June 2nd is Festa della Repubblica - Italy’s Independence Day - and DC’s iconic jazz supper club, Blues Alley will celebrate all month with an Italian Jazz Series. Artists, Giuseppe Cucchiara will perform on Tuesday, June 2 and Caterina Zapponi will perform on Monday, June 15.
Blues Alley Executive Director, Harry Schnipper chats with CiaoDC about the instrumental role of Blues Alley in bringing Italian jazz artists to our Nation’s Capital. In collaboration with The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C (ICS) - the cultural arm of the Embassy of Italy - Blues Alley marks it’s 10th year in celebrating the Italian Jazz Series.
“Almost a decade hosting Italian Jazz Series at Blues Alley - my great introduction was the book by Anna Harwell Celenza, ‘Jazz Italian Style…’ I reached out to The Italian Embassy and we began bringing Italian jazz to the city ever since…Italian jazz is steeped in Italian folk music and it was an easy reach for me as we are celebrating Italy’s Independence Day!” - Harry Schnipper, Executive Director, Blues Alley
I love Jazz and there is NO BETTER PLACE than Blues Alley to see a show. Founded in 1965 in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown, Blues Alley is the nation’s oldest continuing supper club. Known as “the house that Dizzy built,” this iconic Supper Club has hosted legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughan, Eva Cassidy, Stan Getz, Charlie Mingus, Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Grover Washington Jr. and Charlie Byrd. My husband and I try to catch Joshua Redman whenever he comes to town. It’s such a treat and an intimate venue - plus, often you can do a meet and greet with the musicians.
The Blues Alley and ICS Italian Jazz Series is on June 2, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. shows and Monday, June 15, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. shows. Enter to win tickets below!
